This paper examines the use of Educational Technology (EdTech) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) classrooms, with a focus on their integration with teacher-centered pedagogy. In CSL contexts, students often face challenges such as limited language exposure, low confidence, and varying proficiency levels, making effective pedagogical design critical. The paper explores the affordances of EdTech and AI across key pedagogical dimensions, including motivation and engagement, assessment for learning, differentiation, as well as aspects of metacognition and scaffolding. Drawing on classroom examples such as interactive platforms (e.g. Mentimeter, Wordwall) and SLS tools, including AI-supported features such as SALIS and the Speech Evaluation Tool, it illustrates how technology can enhance participation and support personalised learning. At the same time, the paper highlights important limitations, particularly in mixed-ability CSL classrooms where students’ readiness, cognitive load, and ability to engage meaningfully vary. Without prior teacher guidance and structured instruction, technology may result in engagement without meaningful learning. Drawing on brain science, e-pedagogy, and classroom practice, the paper argues that teacher-centered pedagogy remains a necessary foundation for the effective integration of EdTech and AI in CSL classrooms. The paper concludes that EdTech and AI are most effective when purposefully integrated with teacher-centered pedagogy to support language development, structured thinking, and meaningful learning.
